Going Green with Blinds, Shades, and Curtains

Window treatments, such as shades, blinds, and curtains, can be eco-friendly strategies you employ in your home.  If properly installed and used, window treatments can help cut your energy consumption, and you can choose certain fabrics and materials for your window treatments that minimize pollution of the environment.

Shades and blinds.  In addition to providing privacy, shades and blinds help prevent summer’s hot air and winter’s cold air from seeping into your house.  Properly sized shades or blinds should hug the window frame, but not the glass panes, in order to create an air pocket between the blinds or shades and your window.  Another energy-conscious tip is to close your blinds during the day and open them at night during the summer and vice-versa during winter.

Curtains and drapes. Curtains and drapes, especially thick or layered ones, can also help prevent unwanted heat or cold from entering your home.  But in addition to the insulation they provide, curtains and drapes can also be made of eco-friendly materials.  Organic materials, such as burlap, are produced without the use chemicals and fertilizers, which can pollute the surrounding water and air.  Look for these and other natural materials, include cotton, silk, wool, and linen, when choosing the fabric for your curtains or drapes.
