6 Inexpensive Ways to Give a Room a Makeover

Are you getting a little bored with your interior surroundings? You don’t have to break the bank to put a new spin on the space you live in. Here are six ways to give a room a miniature makeover without blowing your budget.

Arrange Similar Items

Reconsider how you’re using the shelving in a room and look at it from a decorative point of view. One quick and easy way to spruce up some shelves or a bookcase is to group similar items together. You can organize by color, or group materials together like ceramics, wood, and glass. The same rule works well with artwork, too. Arranging your wall art in small groups with similar themes can look a lot better than if they were split apart on their own.

Try Your Hand at Painting

Small painting projects can be relatively simple to undertake and can have a big effect on a room. Painting some wooden shelving can bring a splash of color to a monochromatic room and brighten up a space. If you’re adventurous, you can completely transform a room by painting some wood paneling, the brick around your mantle, or even an entire wall.

Make Your Own Artwork

If you aren’t tired of painting, try something a little more creative! Try some simple painting projects you can find in books, take a free class, or follow along with some online or televised tutorials. Anyone can make a simple piece of modern art by creating a triptych. Take three separate canvases and paint them together, using broad strokes and spatters a la Jackson Pollack. Once they’re dry, pull them apart and hang them with some space in between them for some affordable modern art. Best of all, you can use colors that match your existing furniture to really tie the room together.

Create a Mini Gallery

You don’t need to spend your life savings on good wall art. You can inexpensively print out original photographs at your local drugstore and display them in frames on the wall. To keep things inexpensive, the trick is to look out for affordable frames. A great way to pick some up is to buy older framed artwork at flea markets and repurpose the frame with your own photos. Arranging photos in clusters like a galley can put an entirely new and personal spin on a room.

Try Out Some New Legs

Lots of furniture comes with standard stock screw-in legs. You can reinvigorate your furniture by replacing these with something with a little more flavor. There are tons of affordable options available online (and more expensive options as well). Get creative and try something new out that works in your space.

Get Some New Blinds or Shades

Don’t forget your window treatments! You can change the way a window looks by doing something as simple as mounting your window treatments on the outside of your window’s molding as opposed to the inside. There are lots of affordable options for drapes, blinds, and shades, and many retailers will cut them to fit. Adding something as simple as new drapery to a room can yield dynamic results and spruce up any living space.
