Quick answer: Most replacement windows last 20 to 40 years depending on material, but coastal Virginia is harder on them than the national average. Vinyl runs 20 to 40 years, wood 15 to 30, aluminum 15 to 30, fiberglass 30 to 50, and Fibrex® composite 30-plus. Near the water, hardware and seals usually fail before the frame does.
Window lifespan charts are written for the country as a whole. Hampton Roads is not the country as a whole. We get salt-laden air, long humid summers, hard UV, and periodic tropical systems. All four attack a window in different ways, and the failure order here is not what most homeowners expect.
How long does each window material last?
| Material | Typical lifespan | How coastal Virginia affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | 20 to 40 years | Resists salt and moisture. Heat and UV can warp dark colors over time. |
| Wood | 15 to 30 years | Shortest life here. Humidity drives rot and swelling, especially at sills. |
| Aluminum | 15 to 30 years | Most vulnerable. Salt air pits and corrodes the frame directly. |
| Fiberglass | 30 to 50 years | Very stable. Low thermal movement, no corrosion. |
| Fibrex® composite | 30+ years | Does not rot or corrode. Wood fiber limits thermal expansion. |
What actually fails first on a coastal window?
In Hampton Roads, the usual failure order is hardware, then insulated glass seals, then the frame. Salt corrodes locks, balances, hinges, and fasteners long before a vinyl or composite frame gives out. That is why a window can look fine and still be functionally finished.
This is the part that surprises people. A 22-year-old window on a Virginia Beach home often has a perfectly sound frame, a sash that will not stay up, a lock that has seized, and one or two fogged units. Replacing hardware on a discontinued line is frequently harder than replacing the window.
What does the Fibrex durability testing show?
Andersen ran a long-term exposure study on Fibrex® units and reported that after 30 years the material still withstood 150°F and remained roughly twice as strong as vinyl, with no cracking, rot, pitting, corrosion, flaking, blistering, or peeling. It is a manufacturer study, so read it as directional rather than independent, but 30 years of real exposure is a meaningful data point.
How do I know my windows are near the end?
Signs worth acting on:
– Fog, haze, or moisture between the panes, which means the insulated glass seal has failed and cannot be repaired
– Sashes that will not stay open or will not lock, usually a corroded balance or lock
– Visible daylight or a felt draft at the sash meeting rail on a windy day
– Soft or discolored wood at the sill or the bottom of the jamb
– Chalky, pitted aluminum frames, which is salt corrosion and is not reversible
– Condensation on the interior glass during humid stretches, which points to a poor thermal break
– Rooms that will not hold temperature, and a cooling bill that keeps climbing
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that heat gain and heat loss through windows account for 25 to 30 percent of residential heating and cooling energy use. When windows go, you feel it on the bill before you see it on the frame.
Does glass affect how long a window lasts?
It affects how long it performs. Renewal by Andersen’s High-Performance Low-E4 glass blocks about 84% of UV, and the SmartSun™ option blocks roughly 95%. UV is what degrades interior finishes, flooring, and furniture, and it also stresses seals and gaskets. In a climate with as much direct summer sun as coastal Virginia, the higher UV block is doing real work. We cover the options in detail on our energy efficient windows page.
What does the warranty cover, and does it transfer?
Renewal by Andersen covers glass and Fibrex® components for 20 years, hardware for 10 years, and installation labor for 2 years. Coastal impact glass carries a 10-year warranty. The coverage transfers to the next homeowner, which is worth mentioning in a market with the military turnover of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Full terms are on our warranties page.
Frequently asked questions
How long do replacement windows last?
Most replacement windows last 20 to 40 years. Vinyl runs 20 to 40, wood 15 to 30, aluminum 15 to 30, fiberglass 30 to 50, and Fibrex® composite 30 or more. Coastal exposure tends to push each of those toward the lower end, particularly for wood and aluminum.
Does salt air shorten window lifespan?
Yes, mainly through metal components. Salt corrodes aluminum frames, locks, balances, hinges, and fasteners. Vinyl and composite frames do not corrode, so on those windows the hardware and the insulated glass seals typically fail before the frame.
Can a foggy window be repaired?
No. Fog between the panes means the insulated glass unit seal has failed and the inert gas fill has escaped. The glass unit has to be replaced. In older windows it is often more economical to replace the whole unit than to source a discontinued sash.
How often should windows be replaced in Virginia Beach?
There is no fixed interval. Replace based on condition rather than age: failed seals, hardware that no longer works, rot, corrosion, or persistent drafts. Many Hampton Roads homes reach that point between 20 and 30 years, sooner for aluminum or wood near the water.
Do Renewal by Andersen windows really last 30 years?
Andersen’s exposure study reported Fibrex units still performing at 30 years, withstanding 150°F and remaining about twice as strong as vinyl without rot, corrosion, or peeling. That is manufacturer testing rather than independent testing, so treat it as directional evidence of durability.
Does replacing windows help with humidity indoors?
Indirectly. Windows with a better thermal break reduce interior condensation, and properly sealed installations stop humid outside air from infiltrating around the frame. Windows alone will not fix a whole-house humidity problem, but failed windows will certainly make one worse.
