Bringing The Season Indoors For Fall

Make Your Home Feel Like Fall

We’re about a third of the way into fall! If you have yet to make some changes to your home for the fall season, you still have plenty of time to do so. If you’re planning on doing a little decorating this weekend, check out these tips for bringing the autumn indoors.

Seasonal Colors

As the season changes the bright greens of summertime turn to warmer shades of red, orange, and yellow. You can decorate for the season by using the same types of colors indoors, too. We suggest starting with the living room. Start with pillow and blankets in seasonal shades – swapping these out can change a room dramatically. Next up focus on accents for the coffee table and mantle, knick-knacks, signage, and fall garlands are all great here. If you really want to change the look of your room, you can swap out rugs and the artwork on the walls.

Warmer Textiles

When you’re picking out a new blanket or throw in a seasonal color, make sure you pay attention to what it’s made of. Lightweight linens are great for the summer, but the colder air in the fall demands a heavier, warmer choice of fabric. You can warm up a sofa or arm chair by tossing a new throw on it, or adding new pillow-cases with a heavier textile to make it cozier. Don’t be afraid of faux fur, these can be great for the fall and winter time and can look great in lots of different rooms. Heavier textiles for the fall and winter months extend beyond just blankets, though. You’ll want to look for curtains made of heavier fabrics, and even table runners and lamp shades.

Familiar Smells

Aesthetics are just one component of decorating. If you want to really make a room cozy, you should pay attention to how it smells. The scent of smell is often linked to memory, so seasonal smells can bring back fond memories and make family and friends extra comfortable in your home. Candles, potpourri, and soaps can all be used to great effect here. Aim for warmer and earthier scents like pumpkin spice, woodsmoke, and cinnamon.

Don’t have any potpourri or candles on hand? No problem! You can always make a simmer pot. Just fill up a small saucepan with water and add what you have on hand to it. People commonly use cloves, orange rinds, cinnamon sticks, and even chunks of apple. Some other things you might want to try out are vanilla, nutmeg, and even bay leaves.

Spending a couple hours decorating your home for the season makes for a fun activity to take on yourself, and it’s even better if get the kids involved. It’ll make you feel more at home for the fall, and it’s sure to be appreciated by anyone that walks through your doors.
