How to Make a Small Room Seem Larger

Do you have small rooms in your home that you wish were larger? Short of knocking down a wall, you won’t truly be able to increase the dimensions of a room. However, there are several ways you can make a room appear larger than it is by changing the layout, contents, and it’s color scheme. Some things you might consider changing in a room to make it appear larger are:

A Busy Design

Do you have a lot of small pictures, decorations, trophies, trinkets, and knick knacks in the room? These flourishes can add a lot of personality to a room, but too many can make it appear cluttered and smaller overall. If the aim is to make it seem bigger, consider removing some of these items to decrease the amount of visual stimuli inside.

Color Scheme

When putting a room together, settle on a consistent color scheme for your walls, artwork, and furniture. Having too many colors in a room can be overbearing and make the space seem a lot smaller than it is. Painting the connecting hallways that lead to the room can also “open up” a room by removing a visual delineation in the design, making the room seem bigger than it is. Darker colors can make a room seem smaller – so use lighter tones or neutral colors to brighten things up and make a room seem bigger.

Furniture

The more furniture you add to a room, the smaller the space you have to move around. Try to find a balance between the amount of seating you want to include. If it’s in your budget, you might even consider swapping out larger pieces for smaller ones to reduce the amount of space they take up. Also consider furniture that can double as storage. This will allow you to tuck away items that don’t need to be out all the time.

If you’re considering changing the structure of a room itself, adding a bay window to a room is a great way to open it up and make it seem much larger than it actually is.

Adding a Bay Window

Adding a bay window to a room immediately opens it up and makes it seem more inviting. A bay window will increase the actual dimensions of a room because it will protrude from the existing wall. This will instantly add dimension and depth to the layout. Since a bay window is a large opening to the outside of your home, the room will instantly get much more sunlight, brightening things up and making it appear larger inside. A bay window can also include built in storage and seating, making for a great place to tuck away items and doubling as a new seating area for your family or guests. A replacement bay window creates a beautiful focal point to almost any room, and it increases the curb appeal to the exterior of your home as well. If you really want to open a room up, adding a bay window is a great investment.
