Repairing Rotting Floor Caused by Leaking Door

Repairing Rotting Floor Caused by Leaking Door

When an entry door leaks, water can seep into your wooden floor and cause it to rot. If the rot is not repaired right away, it can spread and cause even more damage to your floor.

To repair a rotten wooden floor, you can start with the following steps:

  1. Clear the affected area and make sure you have good lighting.
  2. Using the claw end of the hammer, carefully remove the baseboard trim or other molding on or near the floor.
  3. Take off the finished flooring, about ¾-inch thick, using a circular saw to reveal the rotting subfloor underneath.
  4. Knock a hole in the flooring using a hammer and pull out the rotten portion of the floor.
  5. Continue the wood removal extending to the good part of the subfloor wood in the middle of the first joist or beam on each side of the opening you made. Using a circular saw, shape the hole in the subflooring into a square for easier replacement.

After completing these steps, you can then follow the steps found here to replace the rotten floor area.

Before you repair your rotting floor, make sure you have also addressed the leaking entry door to avoid similar problems in the future.
