Two Ways to Liven Up a Faded Fiberglass Door

Two Ways to Liven Up a Faded Fiberglass Door

Fiberglass doors are prone to fading, especially when they receive a lot of direct sunlight.  While using door overhangs and such can help delay the color fading, sooner or later, you will notice that your front door looks a bit dull and lackluster.  Bring the life back to your front door and make it welcoming again by restoring it.

SFGate Home Guides suggests that you either refinish your fiberglass door if the fading is severe or patch it if fading appears only on some parts of your door.  Whatever you decide to do, you first need to clean the surface of your door with a sponge and appropriate cleaner and then dry it with a clean rag.

  • Refinishing your door.  To refinish your door, you need to remove the old paint with a water-based stripper, apply a layer of gel stain, add at least two layers of fiberglass top coat, and allow to completely dry.  You may use acrylic over your gel stain, as acrylics are known to have longer lifespan.
  • Patching up your door.   To patch up faded areas of your door, you can use gel stain or acrylic.  Make sure the color exactly matches your door.  Wait until the first coat is dry to ensure an accurate color match on the patched up areas.
