Home Improvement Prioritization

For most folks, major home improvement projects are few and far between. Adding a new lamp, a new color of paint, or even a new piece of furniture to a room is one thing – making upgrades to the structure of your home is another. If you’re thinking about replacing your home’s windows, it’s a good idea to create a list of priorities of your personal wants and needs for home improvement. Getting replacement windows is a big decision, but you might be surprised by how many wants and needs you’ll be able to check off your list if you decide to make an upgrade. Check out these tips below to create your own list of priorities for home improvement.

Conduct a Thorough Inspection

Start off by inspecting your home, inside and out. Choose a day where the sun is out and you have as much lighting as possible, and set aside a couple hours to review the condition of your home. Review the exterior of your home – make note of the physical condition of your siding, windows, and roof. Make sure to take notes, and even snap a couple photos for reference later on. Next, move on to the interior. Check out your floors, walls, and ceiling, looking for water damage, stains, cracks, or drafts around your windows and doors. You should also review things like your plumbing and air ducts, and take note of any issues. Many problems might be an inexpensive fix – a leaky faucet can be tightened up, and air ducts can be cleaned and outfitted with new filters if necessary.

Once you’ve thoroughly inspected your house, review your list and highlight any major issues. Take special care to review the condition of your home’s exterior. These problems might be more costly to fix, but they’re often more pressing concerns, and making fixes or upgrades here can save you a lot of money in the long run. Congratulations, you’ve started prioritizing your home improvement projects!

Decide How Much To Take On

The next part requires a little bit of introspection. It’s easy to jump to conclusions about taking on home improvement projects on your own. Doing things DIY can be rewarding, but many projects require a hefty time commitment. The idea of saving money by doing things yourself can be enticing, but if you’re inexperienced and you do something incorrectly, you could end up wasting a lot of money, or even worse – spend the money, time, and effort to do a project on your own only to have to get it done again by a professional. You’ll also want to consider how stressful a project might be to you and your family. To give an example, replacing your roof is not only costly, but extremely noisy and often very messy. It might even require you and your family to leave your home for a few days. In contrast, having your doors or windows replaced is much less stressful. Window replacement projects move faster, and often can be completed in only a day or two.

Think About Your Budget

It all comes down to costs! Make sure to research each project and get a rough estimate of the overall costs. Once you start seriously considering a project, reach out to professionals for a consultation. Mr. Rogers Windows and Doors offers free in-home consultation with no strings attached. You’ll learn a lot about your potential project, get some new ideas, and even learn about financing options. It’s very useful if you decide that replacing your windows is a priority.

Make Your Choice

The only thing left to do is weigh the pros and cons of each project. Look at costs, urgency, benefits to your home, and check this against your wants and desires. Factor all of these into the equation and you’ll be able to make an informed decision on what to do.
